Things went horribly wrong. It was a real train wreck. We tried to {compensate|address the situation, but it was like trying to stop a blizzard with a cocktail stick. We're still picking up the pieces and feeling the sting of this disaster.

This problem has spiraled out of control. It's a total disaster. We've tried just about everything to fix it, but nothing seems to be effective. At this point, it feels like we're hopelessly stuck. Honestly, I don't know what else to do. This is a mess of epic proportions.
This is So Bad, It's Funny (Not Really)
Sometimes you stumble upon situations so terrible that you can't help but laugh. It's like your brain tries read more to understand the sheer magnitude of unadulterated absurdity and just gives up, opting for a weak, desperate giggle as a coping mechanism.
But then, you suddenly become aware that it's not really actually that amusing. It's just plain horrifyingly awful. And the laughter you were experiencing morphs into a groan.
After all is said and done, you are left with a sense of confusion. You start ruminating about the purpose of it all. Was this intended to be funny?
Or were we just living in a simulation gone wrong?
Catastrophe of Epic Proportions
The volcanic eruption struck without warning, consuming entire villages in its sweep. Buildings collapsed like house of cards, and the chaos that ensued was deafening. Thousands were left beneath debris, their fate unknown. The scale of the disaster was unprecedented, forcing survivors to grapple a future forever scarred.
Rescue efforts sprang into action, fighting against time and treacherous conditions to rescue those still alive. The world watched in horror as the full extent of the disaster revealed itself, offering condolences to the affected population.
Awful Day Ever
It all started with a terrible case of terrible hair. I couldn't make it to look decent. As I was dashing out the door, I trippedon and gracefully all over my new shoes. To make matters worse, I was totally running behind for work.
I panting. My {boss|friend|was absolutely furious. I attempted to explain, but it was no use.
The rest of the day was even worse. Everything. I get anything done.
By the time I got home, I was exhausted. This day, this terrible day will be forever remembered as the worst day ever.
Things Went From Bad to Absolutely Terrible
It all started out terribly with a simple mishap/incident/screw-up. But then things went from bad to absolutely terrible. A series/chain/cascade of unfortunate/awful/disastrous events unfolded/occurred/piled on top each other, leaving me feeling like I was in a nightmare/horror movie/comedy of errors. It's the kind of situation where you just want to scream into a pillow.
